George Large – Builders, Chipping Norton

George Large (1936–2025) was a celebrated British artist renowned for his vibrant watercolours and oils that capture the energy, colour, and character of everyday life.

Born in Islington, London in 1936, George Large studied at Hornsey College of Art from 1958 to 1963. He developed a distinctive, joyful style influenced by artists such as Edward Burra and Stanley Spencer. His work often features monumental, muscular human figures—frequently men at work—set against bustling scenes of harbours, markets, streets, and coastal towns. Large’s bold use of colour, dynamic compositions, and playful distortion of form made his paintings instantly recognisable and full of life.

A full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) since 1986 and the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), George Large received the prestigious Winsor & Newton Award in 1989. His paintings are held in important public and private collections, including the National Gallery and the British Consulate in Malta. In later years, Large lived and worked in Rutland and Malta, continuing to paint with the same enthusiasm and sketchbook in hand until his death in 2025 at the age of 89.
