Edgar Rowley Smart (1887–1934) was a talented British Impressionist painter known for his vibrant landscapes, urban scenes, and atmospheric oil and watercolour works. Born on January 26, 1887, in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, England, he developed a distinctive style influenced by French Impressionism, capturing light, colour, and everyday beauty with loose brushwork and a fresh, luminous quality.
Smart began his artistic training at Manchester School of Art from 1901 to 1903, later continuing his studies in Liverpool under etcher F.V. Burridge (1903–1906) and at other institutions including the Manchester Academy of Fine Art. He also travelled and painted extensively in France, drawing inspiration from locations such as Giverny, Paris and Moret-sur-Loing – places closely associated with the Impressionist tradition.
Often referred to simply as Rowley Smart, the artist produced evocative paintings of English countryside scenes (including Lower Wharfedale), still lifes like chrysanthemums, Parisian street views, and French rural landscapes. His work reflects a post-Impressionist sensitivity combined with a strong sense of place and mood.
Though underappreciated during much of the 20th century, Edgar Rowley Smart’s paintings are now sought after by collectors. Many examples of his work are held in public collections including Manchester Art Gallery and referenced in resources from Tate and Art UK.
Edgar Rowley Smart passed away in 1934, leaving behind a legacy as one of the North West’s notable yet somewhat forgotten Impressionist talents whose bright, expressive canvases continue to charm art lovers and enthusiasts of early 20th-century British painting.
